Wilde humorously makes her the tool of the conflict, and much of the satire. For the play to end as a comedy, her objections and obstacles must be dealt with and overcome. Lady Bracknell is first and foremost a symbol of Victorian earnestness and the unhappiness it brings as a result.

The use of gentle parody is probably what protected Wilde from the more biting attacks aimed at his contemporaries such as Henrik Ibsen and Thomas Hardy who commented to similar effect on the values and attitudes of Victorian society. Wilde captures this perfectly with his character Gwendolen who says, “We live, as I hope you know, Mr. Worthing, in an age of ideals…and my ideal has always been to love someone by the name of Earnest. There is something in that name that inspires absolute confidence” (Wilde 1742). The play, The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde is a satirical play that mocks several aspects of Victorian society. These aspects include gender roles, marriage, love, and social status. Victorian society treated men as providers while women took care of the household and children (Klein 39). Wilde provides a satirical view on marriage by using the girls, Gwendolen and Cecily, who are in courtship with Jack and Algernon, respectively.

Wilde's constant reversal of our romantic expectations in stock situations and epigrammatic speech represents one of his methods of constructing a play based upon the principle that in art, form style is higher than representational truth or morality.

Let's look at how he does this by considering the various aspects Wilde wittily asserts that Victorians believe that nothing good comes from France, except for (in Wilde's mind) the occasional lesbian maid. Otherwise, France is a good place to kill off and request the burial of Ernest. The dandy, or fop, was a figure popularized by Wilde. In Wilde’s world, the dandy is a man who pays particular attention to his appearance, dress, and lifestyle, almost to the point of excess, while using his wit and charm to point out society’s hypocrisy and double standards.
